History of April fools day

April Fools Day ( April 1st) is celebrated throughout the world as a day of fun and foolishness, where people play all kinds of practical jokes to each other.
The history of April fools tradition was well established during the 17th century in northern Europe. Every year on April 1st, people in London were invited to go to the Tower of London to see the "Lions washing". Of course there was no such event, but it is reported in newspapers of the time, that many would gather each year, waiting for it.

In the 20th century, with radio and television, april fools day jokes turned into mass campaigns. One of the best known pranks, were the report for the "invasion from mars" in one of USA's most succesful radio stations. People throughout the country freaked out, left their homes, and started searching for food and supplies. Although, this prank was played on halloween, it is still wrongly considered an April fools day joke, and it was the first of many to come:

In 1957, A british television programme claimed that spaghetti trees were eradicated. They even showed images from people harvesting spaghetti from trees, and reveived many calls from people wanting to know how to grow their own spaghetti trees.

In 1976, Sir Patrick Moore, a british astronomer, announced on the radio that a unique alignment of planets would make people lighter. Many listeners actually called to describe a "strange floating sensation".

In 1983, Australian millionaire businessman Dick Smith claimed to have towed an iceberg from Antarctica to Sydney Harbour. He even created a fake iceberg from foam to fool spectators.

The history of April fools day is far from over though. What will be the best prank this year?
